The Perils of Java Schools

Thanks to Nisha for this interesting link: The Perils of Java Schools The author has some good points to make. Indian engineering schools are not far behind their US counterparts when it comes to following this `trend'. In Kerala, only the Calicut University has so far kept its distance from Java. The existing syllabus is really good - especially one lab where students are supposed to write programs in a variety of languages like Lisp/Scheme/Haskell, Prolog, C++/Java. One of the major objectives of an undergraduate curriculum should be giving the students a perspective of the amazing breadth and depth of the computing landscape ; over-emphasising one language and associated set of `technologies' might be good for a vocational course, but not a hard core engineering degree.
