Hurray to Arnold!

2005-10-04T07:30:00

Arnold Joseph Noronha (of Kochi, Kerala) has done the country proud by winning the Bronze medal at the International Olympiad for Informatics in Poland (report in today's Hindu Education Plus). Arnold is NOT an IIT student, even though he could have easily become one. He studies BSc Maths and Computer Science at the famous Chennai Mathematical Institute and his ambition is to become a CS researcher. This is REAL achievement, and it is things like this which the media should highlight if our country is to become a technological power. Rather than being published in the back page of an educational supplement two months after the event, the news should have made it to the front page of all regional and national newspapers - his story might have motivated at least a few kids to do real science rather than becoming glorified data entry operators in Bangalore's software shops.
